DAY 1 – HAZARDOUS MATERIALS AWARENESS

Course Aim:
Hazardous Materials
This is an Awareness Course and is aimed at the First Responder who needs to know how to identify a spill and take the initial precautionary measures. A competent learner will not be a qualified Hazmat Operator or Technician but will be able to identify the presence of hazardous - hydrocarbon - petroleum - chemical-base material incident (spill) and take the relevant precautionary measures to protect him/her, the public, property and the environment on an awareness level
Asbestos
This is an Awareness Course and is aimed at the worker who needs to know how to identify asbestos and take the initial precautionary measures. A competent learner is not a qualified personnel or worker as the work methodology and procedures need to be approved by the Department of Labour and monitored by an Approved Inspection Authority (AIA). The learner or worker will be able to identify the presence of the hazard - asbestos materials and take the relevant precautionary measures to protect him/her, the public, property and the environment on an awareness level. This type of course and a medical are required prior to the worker engaging in asbestos abatement removal and clean up. Once your workers are trained your business can apply to Department of Labour (DOL) to become an accredited Asbestos Contractor, should you wish to do so.
Update on Department of Labour (DOL) re asbestos removal
Up until recently asbestos roof removal and removal of gutters and side sheets did not require Asbestos awareness training, only the removal of raw asbestos, lagging, asbestos insulation and asbestos rope required a contractor to be a Registered Asbestos Contractor. The Department of Labour have now stated that all asbestos work, roof removal etc needs to have workers trained in Asbestos Awareness.
Course Outcomes:
Learners who attend this course will understand:
- The Occupational Health & Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 and Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Substances.
- The National Road Transport Act 74 of 1977, re dangerous goods transportation.
- The Basic Philosophy of Accident Prevention and the 3 basic causes of accidents.
- What hazardous materials are and how to safely control and manage hazardous materials.
- The 9 classes of hazardous materials. They will be able to recognise and identify the presence of hazardous materials.
- The potential effects of hazardous materials on the environment and health.
- The Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.P.s) for First Responders on an awareness level.
- How to identify hazardous materials by applying knowledge gained through MSDS’s, ERG, Placards act.
- Basic principles of:
- Industry recognised hand signals
- Basic first aid as a first responder
- Basic fire extinguisher use
- How to clean-up small spills – during practical session.
- Identifying the different types of asbestos and the sources of potential asbestos exposure.
- Understanding the potential health hazards of asbestos.
- Understand what type of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required.
- Applying effective control of asbestos dust at its source.
- Identifying when asbestos air monitoring is required.
- Carrying out the procedures for collecting air samples of asbestos dust.
- Understanding the basic control measures applicable to asbestos work including asbestos air monitoring and medical surveillance.
- Understanding the application and approval process re Department of Labour prior to work commencing.
- Understanding the role of the Approved Inspection Authority (AIA)
- Understand the transport, waste and disposal legislation of asbestos
- Understand the responsibilities of Employer and Employee
Course Design
This is a full 1 day course covering a theoretical training session and a practical session. The practical
training will include a mock spill where students will be required to follow company emergency spill
procedure and clean up. Should you require assessment for the learners an additional 1 day will be
necessary.
The training will be personalised to your site and standard operating procedures
The course is designed to include or exclude Asbestos Awareness.
Assessment:
1. Assessment is done by observation, oral and written questioning during group sessions.

DAY 2 – CONVEY DANGEROUS GOODS BY ROAD

Unit Standard ID: 123259. NQF level: 3; Credits: 4
It is mandatory for all drivers of heavy vehicles (over 3500kg GVM) that convey dangerous goods to undergo the course for certification purposes as required by the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 regulation 117(e) and 280. This certificate must be produced when applying for a Professional Driving Permit for Dangerous Goods (PrDP-D). The certificate must be issued by a training body approved by the Minister of Transport. (ATL Mobility is such an approved body). The certificate may not be more than 6 months old when applying for the PrDP-D.
Course Aim:
The purpose of this course is to ensure safe loading, conveying and off-loading of dangerous goods according to legal and organisational requirements. Credited learners can convey dangerous goods in accordance with legal, safety, manufacturer and other relevant requirements and handle incidents safely when they occur.
Course Outcomes:
The qualifying learner will be capable of:
- Complying with the National Road Transport Act 74 of 1977 requirements for Conveying Dangerous Goods.
- Safely apply standard operating procedures during loading and off-loading.
- Applying safety procedures in the event of an incident.
- Complying with the requirements of SANS 10231 in terms of behaviour on route and safe loading and off-loading.
- Complying with SANS 10231 part 1 in terms of warning signs and documents
- Understanding the 9 classes of hazardous materials
- Understand and apply the compatibility chart
- Utilising emergency documentation e.g.:
- Tremcard, ERG, MSDS, Placards
- Basic fire fighting principles
Course Design
This is a full 1 day course covering 8 modules including a practical session.
Assessment:
1. Assessment is done by reviewing prior learning, observation, oral and written questioning during
group sessions.
2. The Leaner will complete a P.O.E. (Portfolio of Evidence) which will be submitted, assessed and
internally moderated before a competency certificate is issued.
DAY 3 – EQUIPMENT: PRACTICAL: BIOREMEDIATION
Course Aim:
The aim of the course it to teach the learner how to practically use the bioremediation equipment.

Course Aim
Subject to an 80% pass mark, the qualifying learner will be capable of effectively and safely performing operational procedures and policies relating to entering, working and exiting in confined spaces. The candidate will be able to identify confined space hazards and precautions required to work safely in the environment.

Course Design

1. Assessment is done by Self, Peer and Facilitator evaluation throughout the course
2. The Leaner will complete a P.O.E. (Portfolio of Evidence) which will be submitted, assessed with an
80% pass rate and internally moderated before a competency certificate is issued.
