OHSACT (A Management Overview)
Introduction
In many organisations the middle and senior management have had little of no training on the health and safety legislation and are unaware of the legal duties of both employers and employees. Not complying with the legislation unwittingly could have serious consequences for business owners as non compliance is a criminal offence. The Department of Labour is increasing its inspection effort on small and medium business to evaluate compliance.
Course Aim:
The intention of this course is to provide an overview of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSAct) to Managers and small business owners. This course is aimed at all delegates who are responsible for occupational health and safety form a management perspective. This 2 day course will:
- Explain the basic structure of SA law and how the OHSAct fits into the picture
- Explain in details the employer duties under this law
- Explain in detail employee duties
- Discuss in detail all sections relevant to employers and employees
- Discuss your role as a manager to reduce or mitigate workplace exposure
- Provide and overview of the most important regulations
An abridged copy of the OHSAct will be provided for each delegate as course material.
Course Outcomes:
With the course material provided and knowledge and skill gained through the class work the delegate will be able to:
- Identify and explain the relevant sections in the law that apply to their company
- Identify the sections that impose a legal duty on themselves, according to their role and function within the company
- Assess the current situation at their own work place in relation to practical application of the law

- Explanation and discussion of the sections of the Act
- Explanation and discussion of key regulations.
